Multi-Warehouse Manufacturing, Without the Manual Guesswork

Plenty of manufacturers run separate warehouses for raw materials, semi-finished goods, and finished goods. Odoo's default manufacturing order, however, links raw-material picking and finished-goods receipt to a single warehouse. That's a mismatch with how a real multi-stage production line actually moves stock, and it usually gets worked around manually, order by order: someone manually creates the extra transfers, manually decides which warehouse each step should draw from, and manually keeps track of what's actually ready to kit.

The fix: routes and replenishment, configured to match the real flow

For one client, we solved this entirely with Odoo's own Bill of Materials and route functionality, no custom code required:

• Finished-product manufacturing orders are linked to a "Finished Goods Warehouse Manufacturing" route; semi-finished orders to a "Semi-Finished Goods Warehouse Manufacturing" route.
• Inter-warehouse replenishment is chained to match the real production sequence: the finished-goods warehouse replenishes raw materials and semi-finished goods; the semi-finished warehouse replenishes raw materials; and the raw-material warehouse replenishes through procurement.
• Product categories are bound to the matching route, so the system applies the right flow automatically, with no manual selection per order.

The result: creating a finished-product manufacturing order automatically generates the two delivery orders and one receipt order needed across all three warehouses, and components only "kit" once every document is complete. A semi-finished order does the same at its own scale: one delivery, one receipt. Nobody on the floor has to work out which warehouse should move what, or in which order, because the routing already encodes it.

The bigger pattern

Nothing here is custom development. It's Odoo's own BOM, routes, and warehouse primitives, configured to actually match the shape of a real multi-stage production line instead of assuming everything happens in one warehouse. That's usually the difference between an ERP rollout that fights the business and one that fits it, and it's why we push hard on understanding the real operation before configuring anything.
