Ask a battery or storage maker three questions and watch the room go quiet.
Which cell lot went into which pack, and which customer received it? Where are the capacity, resistance and hi-pot results for the unit that just came back under warranty? And when the EU battery passport applies, from 18 February 2027, where will that data come from?
Most plants can answer the first question with a day of digging, the second with a call to the tester's vendor, and the third with a shrug. The data exists. It just does not live on the unit.
The problem: records for ten minutes, warranty for ten years
- No genealogy. Without cell-to-pack lineage, a single bad lot means a mass recall instead of a targeted one.
- Test data nobody can find. End-of-line results sit on the tester, not on the serial number.
- Paper travellers. A defect found at station 6 is written on a sheet that may or may not follow the unit to rework.
- Compliance built after the fact. Passport, carbon footprint and export paperwork get reconstructed per shipment because the data was never captured at source.
Each of these is a margin leak on its own. Together, they are the reason manufacturers lose weeks at a customs check and months in a warranty dispute.
What we build: an MES that sits on your ERP, with no second database
Majorbird MES runs on top of your existing ERP, Odoo in our case, so there is one product master, one order, one serial. The line does the rest:
- Operators scan in. Every step is guided and error-proofed; the wrong component, the wrong sequence or a skipped test stops the unit.
- Every reading lands on the unit. Capacity, internal resistance, hi-pot, end-of-line results are captured from the test equipment and written against the serial, automatically.
- Failed checks route themselves. A unit that fails goes to rework with its history attached, and only ships once it has passed.
- Full genealogy. Cell to module to pack, component lot to finished unit, each station and each operator on the record.
- Any unit's full history in seconds. Scan a serial, get the build record, the test results and the genealogy. That is the demo we will run live at the booth.
- Open stack, no lock-in. Odoo, PostgreSQL, Grafana, MQTT. Engineers change a flow by drag and drop, not by a change request to a vendor.
The same primitives serve a solar module line or an inverter line. Only the depth of the bill of materials and the compliance overlay change.
The EU battery passport: an export, not a scramble
Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 requires a battery passport, an electronic record reachable by QR code, for light means of transport (LMT) batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh and EV batteries placed on the EU market from 18 February 2027. The passport is not a new database to build in 2027. It is a view over data you either captured on the line or did not: identity, composition, performance and test results, lineage. Capture it at source now, and the passport becomes an export from your MES. Reconstruct it later, and it becomes a per-shipment project. To be clear about our role: we hold the data and produce the export. We are not a certification body, and we will tell you where a notified body or your compliance advisor still comes in.
The same logic applies to the carbon-footprint declarations under the same regulation and to local e-invoicing in Mexico or Vietnam: compliance data is operational data, captured once, used many times.
