Making Odoo Accounting Actually Work in China

Odoo's accounting is capable and clean, right up until it meets Chinese statutory requirements. Then two gaps show up fast: Fapiao, the official tax-invoice system that every compliant business runs on, and the traditional voucher format that Chinese finance teams and auditors expect to see. Neither is optional, and neither comes in the box.

Closing that gap is what turns Odoo from "an ERP we're trialing" into "the system we actually close the books in" for a China operation.

What localizing actually involves

The Fapiao side is more than a print template. It means managing the issuance and reconciliation of official tax invoices inside Odoo, including the shift to the digital Fapiao (数电发票) that is now the norm, so that what the tax system recognizes and what your ledger shows are the same thing. Getting this right removes a whole layer of manual cross-checking between Odoo and a separate invoicing tool.

The voucher side is about recognizability. Chinese accountants and auditors read a specific bookkeeping voucher layout, and a finance team that has worked that way for years shouldn't have to relearn their own records because the software prefers a Western format. A proper traditional Chinese voucher output means the people who use the system every day, and the auditors who check it, see something familiar and correct.

Why this matters beyond China

Localization is the difference between an ERP that technically supports a country and one a local team will genuinely adopt. A global rollout that ignores this ends up with the China office quietly keeping its old system alongside Odoo, which defeats the point of a single source of truth. Majorbird builds this localization directly into the implementation, from Fapiao handling to the voucher formats, because for a China operation it isn't a nice-to-have. It's the part that decides whether Odoo gets used at all.

If you're running or planning an Odoo footprint that touches China, it's worth getting the localization right from the start. Talk it through with the Majorbird team at odoo@majorbird.com or www.majorbird.com.
